MQI coaches share biggest tips from their school year
Dear friends of MQI,
Congratulations on completing another school year!
At MQI Coaching, we've had a rewarding year partnering with math coaches, school leaders, and teachers across the country.
We asked school-based coaches to reflect on the year using MQI Coaching and share their most impactful practices and greatest lessons learned. Here are some themes that emerged:
1. Teacher Agency Fosters Buy-In.
Teacher agency throughout the coaching cycle fosters buy-in. When teachers have the autonomy to make decisions about change, the outcome is enduring. Set a strong coaching foundation by eliciting and building on teachers’ own goals and priorities.
2. Lesson recordings galvanize critical reflection.
Recording lessons and reviewing transcripts provides an opportunity for teachers to be more self-reflective. Providing teachers with first hand data of what happened in their classroom enables them to do their own critical reflection of what students and themselves are saying and doing.
3. Embrace Incremental Change.
Coach within teachers’ current structures (e.g. curriculum, capacity, goals) and support them in identifying and implementing incremental tweaks. Small, meaningful adjustments can be manageable for teachers to implement and still highly impactful for their students.
We thank the coaches in our community for sharing these insights and hope that they resonated with you. Wishing you a wonderful summer!
